Why use RAW files for exposure merging?

A RAW file stores the unprocessed sensor data before the camera applies any tone curve, noise reduction, or sharpening. That gives you 12–14 bits of data per channel, versus the 8 bits in a JPEG. When frames are merged, each contributes tonal data across its range, and a RAW source has more of it to give. Merging from JPEG is possible, but those files have already lost information and picked up compression artifacts; both show in the finished merge.

In our online HDR editor you're able to merge your exposures and adjust the look, even choose how "compressed" or physically accurate you want your final HDR image:

What does the merge actually do?

The tool reads the exposure value from each file's metadata, aligns the frames to compensate for any camera movement between shots, and maps the tonal range of each exposure into a shared representation. The output draws highlight detail from the darkest frames and shadow detail from the brightest. The built-in editor then gives you control over the tone mapping before you export.

How to combine your RAW files

  1. Drop your RAW files into the upload area above. CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, DNG, and most other RAW formats are supported.
  2. Click Merge and wait for the alignment and blend to finish.
  3. Refine the tone mapping in the editor, then export your finished image.
